The principle of their operation is as follows: first, air enters the inlet, then, due to the rotation of the blade wheel located in the spiral casing, it enters the channels between the wheel blades, where it moves under the action of centrifugal force (hence the name of the fan), and, finally, collected by a casing and sent to the outlet.

A centrifugal or radial fan consists of three main parts:

• Frame with shaft and bearings.

An electric motor is used to drive the fan.

In turn, the fan wheel — its main element, consists of blades, front and rear discs, as well as a hub. The number of blades and how they are bent forward or backward depends on the purpose of using a centrifugal fan.

Wheels with backward curved blades are more economical, consume 20% less electricity and handle airflow overloads well. But fans with forward-curved blades also have their advantages. So, they are less noisy due to the lower speed, and also differ in the smaller size of the wheel, and hence the body.

What are centrifugal fans

The fan wheel can rotate clockwise or counterclockwise (when viewed from the side where the air is sucked in), and the radial fan is called right or left rotation, respectively.

Depending on the total pressure created during the movement of air, centrifugal fans are divided into 3 groups:

• High pressure — 3000 — 12 000 Pa

• Medium pressure — 1000 — 3000 Pa

• Low pressure — up to 1000 Pa.

The next important parameter is the performance of a centrifugal fan, that is, how much air it can move per unit of time. When calculating this indicator, it is necessary to take into account air losses or suction in the air ducts.
