Fancoil is an element of the air conditioning system, similar in principle to the indoor unit of a split system. Since the fan coil is not a stand-alone device and only works in the system, here we will not only consider the issue of how to choose a fancoilby comparing their various types and technical characteristics, but also touch on the general principles for choosing the best air conditioning system for your purposes using fan coil units.

The device and scope of fan coil units

The main parts of the fan coil unit are a radiator-heat exchanger, into which a coolant is supplied from an external source, and a fan associated with it. A fancoil can work both for cooling and heating — it all depends on the temperature of the coolant supplied to it. By changing the fan speed, you can adjust the performance of the device and the intensity of cooling or heating the air in the room without changing the temperature and flow rate of the coolant. The desired temperature is given to the heat carrier in an external device, most often in the so-called chiller, and then it is distributed throughout the system with a number of fan coil units.

Centralized air conditioning system using fan coil units

  1. chiller
  2. Pumping station
  3. Fancoils

Water or antifreeze can be used as a coolant. When the system is operating for cooling, the use of antifreeze significantly increases its efficiency, since, unlike water, such a coolant can also be given a negative temperature.

A centralized air conditioning system using fan coils is installed in large production halls, supermarkets or public areas, as well as in organizations with a large number of individual rooms, such as business centers. The choice of a centralized air conditioning system in such cases provides significant savings compared to the use of a large number of autonomous air conditioners, both in terms of the total cost of equipment and energy costs.

Types of fan coil units — how to choose?

Fan coil units are divided according to the type of operation into two-pipe (single-circuit) and four-pipe (double-circuit), as well as by type of installation: wall-mounted, floor-ceiling, cassette and channel.

  • Two-pipe fan coil

It uses one coolant and, depending on its temperature, can work either in heating mode or in cooling mode. The intensity of heating or cooling can be adjusted, but in order to switch from one mode to another, it is necessary to change the temperature of the coolant in the entire system.

  • Four-pipe fan coil

It has two independent heat exchangers, one of which is supplied with a cold coolant, and the other with a hot one. By directing the air flow to different heat exchangers, it is possible to make such a device work both for heating and for cooling, like a hot and cold water mixer. A four-pipe fan coil unit is, in fact, two devices mounted in one housing, which is why it costs much more. The complexity of the entire system, operating simultaneously on two circuits, also doubles. The choice of a two-circuit system is justified only in hotels, where each of the guests may have their own tastes. In most cases, a single-circuit one is also quite sufficient, which will work for cooling in summer, and in winter for air heating in all serviced premises.

  • Wall mounted fan coil units

The design is very similar to conventional wall-mounted air conditioners. They can be installed in any room, it is enough just to bring flexible pipes through which the coolant will circulate. They are equipped with a wired or wireless remote control, from which you can adjust the intensity and direction, and for double-circuit models, the temperature of the air flow. Some models are equipped with a thermostat that automatically maintains the set temperature in the room.

  • Floor and ceiling fan coil units

Mounted on the floor or on the ceiling. Their installation is also simple and can be done in any room. The choice of installation on the floor or ceiling depends not only on the interior solution, but also on the mode in which the device will be used more often. For heating, it is better to install it below, and for cooling, it is better to install it from above. Then the mixing of air in the room will occur naturally due to convection and will require less power supplied to the fan, which will not only save electricity, but also reduce noise.

  • Cassette fan coil units

Mounted in false ceiling. This installation method makes it easy to hide all wires and pipes, and when using ceilings with good soundproofing qualities, it can significantly reduce the noise level from a running fan.

  • Duct fan coil units

They are installed in the supply ventilation channel, which, as with the installation of cassette models, makes all structures and supplied communications invisible — only the ventilation grill is visible from the outside. But, unlike cassette, channel fan coil units do not require the installation of suspended ceilings, which “eat up” part of the height of the room.

Technical characteristics of fan coil units

The main technical characteristic of fan coil units is their thermal power, which can be different in cooling or heating mode. Other important characteristics are productivity, which means the amount of air driven per unit time, and the effective length of the air jet. It is these characteristics that are taken into account when choosing a fan coil unit for the size of a particular room.

These devices consume electric power only for the operation of fans, and it is usually small, but if there are a lot of such devices in the system, this can create a serious additional load on the power grid. In addition, many systems use a single control panel for all fan coil units, and the total power of the devices connected to it is limited.

Also important is such a technical characteristic as the noise level. Unfortunately, a fan, like any mechanical system, cannot operate absolutely silently, and if these devices are installed in rooms where people live or work, it is better to choose models with a minimum noise level.

How much does it cost and where to buy a fan coil

Given the variety of designs and models of fan coil units, it is difficult to talk about their prices in general — they vary greatly. For example, only the prices for the most common channel models vary in the range from 15 to 40 thousand rubles.

You can buy a fancoil in our online store, where about 20 models are presented.
